Important Announcement: Google Accounts Suspension After December 9, 2024

Although Google traditionally offered unlimited storage for free to its education customers, this model became unsustainable due to the rapid growth in stored data. In July 2022, Google implemented a new storage policy. Under this policy, HKU SPACE's usage exceeded the new limit by a large margin. Consequently, in 2022, ITSU promoted the use of the Microsoft 365 platform and migrated student email accounts to Outlook.

Since Jun 2023, Google had made our organization including two domains (@learner.hkuspace.hku.hk and @gapps.hkuspace.hku.hk) of Google accounts read-only status. ITS posted announcement to inform users to back up their data and switching to Microsoft platform.

On November 25, 2024, Google suspended our accounts. ITS has requested Google to unsuspend our domains, and Google has granted us a 14-day grace period for users to back up their data. After December 9, 2024, our Google accounts will be suspended again. Consequently, we have sent an urgent announcement and emails to our users.

Impacts 影響
Users must ensure that all important data from Google Workspace has been backed up or transferred to another platform. Any data not migrated might be lost if not backed up properly.

Email Features: Users will continue to use Outlook's features for email management, including its calendar, contacts, and task management tools. These features are integrated with other Microsoft 365 applications, providing a seamless experience.

Email Address: The email addresses remain the same, but the platform for accessing and managing emails has changed to Microsoft Outlook since 2022.

Users are recommended to export their data from their Google accounts using Google Takeout before December 9, 2024. Here are the steps:

Sign in to your Google Account: Go to Google Takeout.
